Niepoort Garrafeira, Colheita and Vintage 1977 - 1927

Niepoort Garrafeira 1977 ****
Garrafeira is an unusual style of Port, unique to Niepoort. From the 1977 vintage this wine spent 5 years in wood with the remainder in glass demi-john before bottling in 2007. Brick red centre, tawny rim; fine, fragrant creamy nose, good milk chocolate character; fine, rich sweet-spicy milk chocolate flavours, still quite vibrant and fresh with a long fine finish. 17.5

Niepoort Garrafeira 1931 ****
This wine spent 4 years in wood and and thirty eight years in five litre glass demi-johns before being bottled in 1973. Fine colour, mid-deep centre, amber on the rim; slightly rustic, vinagrinho aromas, slightly dumb; rich, intensely sweet and quite unctuous, lovely weight and depth with fine peppery tannins and great balance. 17

Niepoort Colheita 1927 (bottled 1943) ****/*****
Brick-red centre to an olive-green rim; fine, high toned, vinagrinho aromas with some meaty concentration and dark chocolate; still remarkably firm, peppery tannins and sweet damson fruit, lovely for its age, still giving the impression of freshness on the finish. 18.5

Niepoort 1955 Vintage Port *****
Mid-deep centre, thin browning rim; quite closed (surprisingly so), very fresh with wonderful underlying concentration, opening up to reveal floral character; quite intense, fine bitter chocolate focus and concentration, retaining lovely sweetness and richness, fine and poised with long bitter-sweet length. Outstanding. 19
